Navigating Landmines: Staying Sober

adobestock 190808519 1 Recovered addicts will tell you, their addiction is never far from their thoughts. It’s not that their obsessing over or wishing for whatever substance or activity they were addicted to. Rather, it’s an awareness of how many different ways addiction can sneak back into their lives – and why they have to be ever-vigilant and aware of the risks. It’s been compared to walking through a field filled with landmines and having to watch carefully to avoid stepping on one – and it can be exhausting. You can remove some of that burden with lifestyle changes that help support your recovery.

Navigating Friendship Landmines

When you return to your life after treatment, friends may reach out to you and be happy to see you. For the most part, surrounding yourself with friends and supportive family is the right thing to do. But if the friends reaching out to you are still addicts, or worse, try to immediately tempt you with the substance or activity you fought to be free of, you need to make the choice to distance them.

Navigating Stress Landmines

From finding a job and a place to live to dealing with the inevitable necessity to explain your reality to some people, to every day stresses like poverty, illness, politics, and more, you will find that stress makes recovery harder. Navigating landmines that trigger stress require you to be mindful, to protect yourself, and to practice self-care.

Navigating Guilt

One of the things most former addicts deal with is guilt. There is no easy way through this, other than to continue your therapy and find your way to the point of forgiveness. It is important to forgive yourself, even if you have others in your life who cannot.

One of the best ways of navigating landmines and staying sober is through continuing your meetings. The Wasatch Warrior Alumni Program is to create connections, provide ongoing support, and have a lot of fun along the way. We’re here to help you through the minefield.
