New Year’s Resolutions for Those Recovering From Addiction

copy of istock 1135080838 1 1 January is typically a time for people to take a step back, evaluate their lives, and to think about the possibilities for the new year. If you are recovering from addiction, there is no better time to think about how you will make the upcoming months your best yet. Here are some resolutions to consider.

Stay positive

It can be difficult to stay positive even when things have been going well – it is all too easy for negative thoughts to appear out of nowhere. However, the work to become positive is worth it. Practice catching those negative thoughts before they have a chance to drag you down. Speak to yourself with positive words and perform positive actions.

Take responsibility for yourself

An important part of addiction recovery (and life!) is to take responsibility for your actions and decisions. It can be hard to do this and learn from the bad decisions, but when you take responsibility for yourself this also means that you get to celebrate the good moves you make as yours alone and honor yourself for making them.

Accept help when it is offered

Friends and family may not fully understand what is happening in your life, but that doesn’t mean they don’t truly want to help you. Don’t push people away if they offer help – embrace them and be grateful for them.

Be grateful for the little things

While we are on the subject of being grateful, take the time each day to think about the things you are grateful for. Try to come up with four or five – or even one if that’s all you can manage. You may want to write them down in a notebook each day.

Celebrate the little victories

It is very easy to be too hard on yourself. Make sure you give yourself credit for the good days you have and the positive things you do for yourself and others.
