Beating the Winter Blues

istock 636327934 With the cold temperatures, less daylight, and more time spent inside, it is no wonder that the winter can be a difficult time for many people. In fact, this issue is so widespread that it is a recognized psychological problem, known as seasonal affective disorder. This disorder is characterized by feelings of depression, fatigue, isolation, and social withdrawal. Wasatch Crest Treatment Services can help, with therapeutic choices available. But there are things you can do to take extra care of yourself during these winter months, with these tips for beating the winter blues.

  1. Keep exercising

It may be tempting to skip the gym, go home, and curl up with a blanket. However, you shouldn’t skip exercise, because it can do wonders for you mentally and physically. Even a short walk or a yoga session on a DVD can help beat the blahs.

  1. Keep eating right

When the weather is cold it can be tempting to try to live only on comfort foods, which are often less than nutritious. However, studies have shown that what you eat can influence how your brain works, in addition to your mood. Allow yourself to indulge in your favorite dessert without guilt – just make sure your diet mainly consists of foods that are good for you.

  1. Pamper yourself

It is often the little things that can help us get through a cold winter. Pamper yourself with a bubble bath or an hour of “you” time to finally finish that book you started months ago – find something that you enjoy doing and can look forward to on a dark winter day.

  1. Don’t isolate yourself

It can be tempting to hide away at home as the weather rages outside. Make an effort to meet with friends at least once a week. You may not feel much like going, but once you are out with friends it is almost certain to improve your mood!

Winter can be a tough time for everyone, but it can be especially difficult if you are recovering from addiction or other problems. Don’t let winter bring you down. If you need help with addiction and getting through a difficult season, call Wasatch Crest Treatment in Heber, Utah, at (800) 385-3507.
