Utah Prescription Drug Take Back Day

April 27, 2019

Utah’s Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a bi-annual event hosted by the Attorney General’s Office, the UT National Guard, Prevention Resource Centers, the Department of Health, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Take Back Day occurs throughout Utah at various law-enforcement agencies and is dedicated to the safe, convenient, responsible and anonymous disposal of prescription drugs. Utah Take Back aims to inform the general public about the dangers associated with improper disposal of expired or unused medications. Last April Utah law enforcement partners collected 17,364 pounds of unused/unwanted prescriptions! Please keep in mind that many law enforcement agencies (and other facilities) in Utah state have 24-hour secure drop boxes, so safe collection sites are always available.

When is Utah Prescription Drug Take Back Day?

Utah Prescription Drug Take Back Day is being held on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 from 10AM – 2PM. If you want to contribute to the reduction of prescription drug abuse, consider cleaning out your medicine cabinet and coming to a Utah location near you.

Why is Utah Prescription Drug Take Back Day Important?

Prescription drug abuse has become a major issue in the United States, and many times, users gain these medications through family medicine cabinets or even the trash. A few of the major risks associated with improper prescription drug disposal include, but are not limited to:

  1. Prescription and pharmaceutical drugs can be equally as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a doctor’s supervision.
  2. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends — and the home medicine cabinet.
  3. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.
  4. Prescription drugs that go unused and are thrown in the trash can easily be retrieved, abused, or illegally sold.
  5. Medications that are unused, expired, or lost are a public safety issue as it can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse.
