Five Things to Do When You Get Out of Drug Rehab
Once you’ve completed treatment and rehab for drug or alcohol addiction, the transition back to real life can be very difficult if you aren’t prepared. While drug addiction centers give you as much training and education about dealing with your triggers as possible, it’s now up to you to choose the course of your life.
Just like anything worth having, life after rehab requires preparation in order to increase your chances of success. Here at Wasatch Crest, our goal is to see you lead a successful life free of drugs and alcohol, so we have some tips to help you prepare for life after rehab.
Build a Sober Circle of Friends
If you keep the same friends you had when your life revolved around drugs, you are more likely to fall back into bad habits quickly. It may be necessary to cut off the friendships that centered on your drug use, and go back to friends and a social network that is sober. When you are surrounded by sober individuals, you are less likely to be tempted.
Living Arrangements
Once you leave rehab, it’s time to assess your neighborhood and your living situation. If you don’t have a safe, supportive, drug-free home to return to, you may want to consider a sober living home or a halfway house until you feel strong enough to find your own place. If your neighborhood holds bad memories for you and drugs are easily accessible, it may be time to move somewhere new for a fresh start.
Keep up on Treatment
Therapy is designed to help you set goals for your future, strengthen your coping skills and deal with triggers that may cause relapse. Keep up on your regular therapy appointments so you can stay ahead of any cravings or relapses you may have. No matter how hectic life gets, your treatment is essential to your future.
Find a Sobriety Group
You need to connect with people that understand your situation, and you also need the chance to help others through their addictions down the road. Find a drug rehab support group that is close to you, and attend regularly. This gives you access to an entire network of people that are experts at handling addiction and rehab.
Serve Others
When you give your time and energy to others, it’s easier to forget about your own problems. The busier you are, the less likely you are to relapse. Get involved in your community, or volunteer at an animal shelter while you are getting back on your feet.
