Overdose, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, On the Rise with Pandemic

As numbers of COVID-19 cases rise across the nation, businesses shut back down to help mitigate the crisis, and people deal with economic insecurity and continued social isolation, overdoses and drug and alcohol abuse are on the rise. Because of the ongoing stress of the pandemic and the economic and emotional strife people have experienced because of it, addictive behaviors continue to escalate.

Economic Struggle and Addiction

You are not alone if you are experiencing stress over losing your job or being laid off during the crisis. If you have not yet received your stimulus check from the government, you can follow up on it here. If you are struggling to make credit card or house payments, contact your lender. There are programs in place to allow them to postpone your payments. If you are falling behind on your rent and worried about being evicted, the Utah State Bar has a number of resources to help you here.

Social Isolation and Addiction

Community support – the close connections of family and friends – are often the lifeline that keeps an addict in recovery. Since the pandemic began, there has been a significant increase in alcohol sales as well as an increase in the number of drug overdoses. Over the last several months of the pandemic, there have been escalating numbers of overdoses – up more than 40%. To help combat the isolation, be sure to reach out to people over Zoom or Skype, and attend our alumni Zoom meetings every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. MST.
