How to Tell If a Loved One Is Struggling with Addiction

Has your loved one experienced an unusual change in behavior? Are they struggling at work or with friends? How can you tell if a loved one is struggling with addiction?

Signs of Alcohol Addiction

Some of the telltale signs that your loved one may be struggling with an alcohol addiction is their inability to get through the day without a drink. Instead of just drinking socially, they may need a drink to start the day, or find excuses to only participate in activities in which they can drink. They may get angry or short-tempered if you mention their drinking. Eventually, they will begin to struggle at work and in their relationships. They may start hiding their alcohol consumption (a splash of rum in their morning coffee; drinking Vodka but saying it is water).

Signs of Drug Addiction

In many ways, recognizing the signs of drug addiction are more readily recognizable. Your loved one’s personality may change; they may be more anxious and irritable. You may notice money disappear or they will ask for money. They may pull away from activities and friendships for no apparent reason. They may lose their job. In some cases, you may notice a lack of coordination, tremors, weight loss, mood swings, and even needle marks.

Getting Help for Your Loved One

Helping your loved one seek treatment can be difficult. They may be defensive or become angry or lash out at you for accusing them of being addicted. You cannot force them to seek help, and your support may be essential as long as it is safe to do so. But you can help them make the connection between the things going wrong in their lives – job loss, friendship problems, relationship problems, illness – and their consumption of drugs or alcohol. In some cases, it may be helpful to hold an intervention.
