The Calming Effect of Religion and Spirituality

Religion and spirituality are topics that can arouse controversy. However, whether you are a firm follower of your faith or struggle to come to peace with all the doubts you have about religion, most psychologists would agree that having spiritual beliefs can have a positive impact on a person’s life, mental health, and sense of community. Here are some ways that religion and spirituality can help us in our everyday lives.

Mindfulness

Religion and spirituality (which is not necessarily following a specific religion, but still feeling there is a connection to something higher) can encourage a person to reflect on things and make some important decisions about their life and what they want out of it. They also allow a person to feel connected to the world and others.

Mental health

Research has found that people who are involved in religious practices tend to cope better with stress, depression, and anxiety. It is thought that this is because religious people seem to have a sense of purpose and see more meaning to life. A spiritual outlook can also help people to make sense of the bad things that can happen.

Rituals

Following a religion gives you an opportunity to rest and spend time with family, such as at Christmas or Easter gatherings. Religion also offers the chance for important rituals, such as a funeral ceremony, that can offer comfort at a difficult time. Even going to church once a week provides structure, which can help when you are having a difficult time.

Community

Being part of a religious community can give you the chance to connect with others, provides a safe place for social engagement, and gives you a sense that you belong to a group, which is important even for the most introverted person.

However, it doesn’t matter what the research says – what matters is if you find that religion and a spiritual feeling can help to give you peace and maybe even provide some answers for your life.
