Don’t Apologize for Staying Away from People Who Enabled You

Recovery is not a destination; it is a way of life. Remaining in recovery requires you to make not just immediate changes to your life, like avoiding alcohol and drugs and getting physically healthy, but to make long-term changes to your life. What do those long-term changes look like? It depends on the person, but for most people, it means staying away from people who are still addicted or who enabled your addiction.

People Will Try to Bring You Down

The old adage is true: misery loves company. When you get out of rehab and start to move on and rebuild your life, there will be people who try to pull you back down. They may guilt you or goad you or even make fun of you. Some people may even try to dredge up the history of your previous behavior that you had when you were addicted. All addicts behave differently when they are desperate for the next hit, but once you’ve done the hard work of moving beyond that, you do not have to listen to or be involved with people who want to hurt you or who cause harm to your mental health.

Surround Yourself with People Who Care

As you remove the people from your life who are not supportive of your effort to remain sober and clean, replace them with people who support you and believe in you. This may be fellow addicts in recovery, your mentor and sponsor, supportive family members, and friends from before addiction. Allow yourself to be surrounded by people who will lift you up and help you stay on your journey to be addiction-free.

Prioritize You

Guilt is a familiar and constant companion to the addict, but you do not have to feel guilty for distancing yourself from people who either don’t or cannot support your recovery. And don’t feel bad if you are not in a place in your life where you can be someone else’s support. Prioritizing your own health and recovery as you rebuild your life is essential.
